These letters are completely arbitrary: they don't mandate anything.
Plug In is a small publication that includes 12 types of electrical outlet plugs-in in an accordion binding. So people can see all of the plugs in types in a row. This kind of binding allows people to see it as a simple pattern, but it also has a small caption below it. Each plugin is the real size in use.
