The book, Where the Wind Blows, is a collaboration between me, Lily Chen, Mary Yang, and Rosa Yang. I was in charge of one part of the book, which is the Chinese characters’ design. The Chinese characters in the book are based on the typeface I have created for the Alphabets, using the traditional knitting technique from East Asia, the origin of mahjong.

In each mahjong set, there are a total of 16 wind tiles—4 of each of the 4 winds. There are a total of 12 dragon tiles—4 of each of the 3 dragons. This publication features four sets of visual explorations for honor tiles sets. Each set plays on the use of color, icons, Chinese characters, and phonetics (English and Mandarin Chinese) to explore the inherent meaning and function of each tile in the game of mahjong.

RUKAI KNITTING

The alphabets was inspired by one of the Taiwanese aboriginal people’s linen weaving patterns. I chose the sun pattern, where each intersection symbolizes the unity of families in the face of challenge.
